Catherine de Medici Debate

Catherine's difficulties in ruling - difficult legacy

It is important to point out like N.Sutherland emphasizes that Catherine inherited a difficult legacy, with the French crown almost bankrupt, an ineffective tax system, tense international pressures and of course religious disunity. She also lacked the authority of King as Knecht points out; she depended on the support of nobility and had to maintain independence surrounded by aristocratic rivalries, which flourished without a mature King. This means her success as a ruler was always going to be limited, had she been in a true Queen or been in power at a different time things may have been different.
