Catherine de Medici Debate

Book 'The Prince' written by Niccolo Machiavelli

Her critics have claimed that she used a book throughout her life written by Niccolo Machiavelli called 'the prince' which was dedicated to Catherine's father in an effort to integrate himself with the family. The book wrote that a leader should be prepared to use punishment and to eliminate people, to step out of the normal lines of morality to be an effective ruler. After the massacre some people claimed she used it as her bible – using it for cruel deeds.

There is absolutely no proof of this – this is just propaganda used by Huguenot leaders to taint her reputation further. Novelists just wanted to make her seem evil rather than just a leader who made mistakes.
