Catherine de Medici Debate

Was the massacre planned?

In September 1571 Coligny was welcomed back to court some historians, who believe Catherine was entirely to blame for the massacre, may suggest that Catherine was planning to assassinate the Huguenot leaders even at this time, however evidence contradicts this view as Catherine told Petrucci the Tuscan ambassador, she was ready to receive the Huguenot leaders with open arms provided they give some reliable demonstration of their loyalty and obedience. Of course she may not have been genuine but there is no evidence to suggest any sort of plans, therefore it seems more likely that there was some sort of truth in her words.
