Catherine de Medici Debate

Catherine's middle ground

Catherine is always thought to be an enemy to the Huguenots however when Duke of Guise was assassinated on the 18th February 1552 Catherine among others was also blamed for the assassination. This shows that at this time she was hated by both Catholics and Huguenots by trying to hold the middle ground. She admitted to the Venetian ambassador that ‘If monsieur Guise had perished sooner, peace would have been achieved more quickly’. This suggests she may have ordered his assassination showing her firm resolve for peace and religious toleration but even if she did not proves she was not firmly on the Catholic side. It also shows that her policy of toleration may have been doomed as it meant both sides mistrusted her.
